people think saints and prophets

lived on nothing but visions and miracles


don't you think the people of their times

didn't give them crusts of bread to eat

and warm muddy water to drink

then patronize them with the equivalent of a penny?


the same would happen today if any of them showed up

but we'd just avert our eyes

thinking they were manic-depressive maniac

smelly and dangerous to pass on the street?


(and maybe some saints and prophets were just manic-depressive)

what makes people think life was any different


or that there is any time at all?
