we're all off the hook


we thought we could make amends

we thought we could make things right


but all we do is add to our grief

all we do is worsen our stance


if you want so badly to make

any kind of amends


then the way to do it

is to humbly accept your privations


and know your intent is as off-base

as the 'sins' for which you're trying to atone


what a dent in the pride that thinks itself humble

what a come down for the vain who think they're righteous....
