because memory defines identity
it is hard to live in the continuum of our living
without sometimes falling from a heightened awareness
into a sad sweet nostalgia for what is no more
but because identity is defined by memory
it isn't so hard to shake off the backward glance
and continue forward to some future knowing
what is past is still present in us...the content of our beings
