amazing to be living at this supernal time

of terrors and revelations


and all most of us can do is cling

to old shameful habits of bigotry


and hubris as if we could stay

the advance of the denouncement


and contain all awareness to an old system

of presumption and insecurity


even with a New Age at hand

the world itself won't be different at all


believers will still believe and

deceivers will still deceive


only the social fabric will be a new swath of chintz

and the rewards a heightened awareness of shame
