wise men know better than to weep

but do because of their great compassion


while fools flood their cheeks in a salty wash

for show and hide from the commitment of empathy


and if the pain to which they minister

leaves the recipient mournful and bemused


the sufferer will at least know a truth either way

and all will be judged on their fidelity to themselves
