once walking on the shore of the Hackensack River
I saw a spider trapped on a rock as the waves lapped in
cutting of an escape
the spider just looked at the rising water
then jittered one way and then another
I took a long twig lying in the small waves
and laid it on the rock as a bridge to the sand
the spider looked the twig
and looked
and looked
then scampered down the twig to the shore
and flittered away into some weeds
no glory or self-preening here
just the unconscious act to save a living being
