broke

no money left

and while those fortunate enough

to have work celebrate

this May Day


some of us here

don't quite get the resonance


even those who have just enough

will find it gone soon enough


of course there will always be a May Day

and of course there will always be those destitute


even Jesus said 'the poor will always be with you'

speaking for the Father


who spoke of the wicked prospering

and the good suffering


broke


no spirit left


and ever at the mercy of

the heartless self-satisfied
