not even the strongest faith

can believe the reckless wholesale savaging


of the heart and soul

to scour it for some redemption


it is only our vanity that blocks us

from full appreciation of our salvation

for their failure to ever convey the total reality


we ask too much of these inadequate symbols

and excuse ourselves with them)
