this is the most peaceful
easy night in which
to go to sleep I've felt in ages
free of a life-long mythology
that did nothing but stay
and hamper each move
and how sweet to awaken at liberty
relieved from that morning-after
rue and guilt and fear that maybe I was wrong
no way that will prevail after so many years
wrestling with no demon but myself
and this is the poetry I make of it now
empty and calm as a biography fades
and the reader turns a new page
