like a masterless dog
I rove the dark corners
of the street
wild in my pounce
on the occasional prey
and in pure fright
at a sudden sweeping headlight
or movement of clacking shoes on the pavement
teeth bared
until the danger is met
or the danger has passed
if this seems extreme
in the telling
know that this heart feels otherwise
